What Is Lean Body Mass?
Lean body mass (LBM) is everything in your body that is not fat: skeletal muscle, bone, organs, skin, connective tissue, and body water. If you weigh 80 kg at 20% body fat, 16 kg is fat and 64 kg is lean body mass. It is the metabolically active side of the scale — the tissue that burns calories, moves you, and holds you up.

Lean percentage mirrors body fat: most men sit roughly between 75% and 90% lean, most women between 68% and 85%, with athletes at the high end. Absolute LBM scales with body size — a 180 cm man around 80 kg typically carries 57–64 kg of lean mass.
How LBM Is Measured or Estimated
Lab methods (DEXA, hydrostatic weighing) measure it directly. At home you have two options: formulas (Boer, James, Hume — from sex, height, and weight) or the direct route, weight × (1 − body fat ÷ 100), using a body fat estimate from the Navy method. Why It Matters
