Lean Body Mass vs Muscle Mass
The two terms get used interchangeably in gyms and on fitness scales, but they are not the same thing. Lean body mass (LBM) is all non-fat tissue; muscle mass is only the skeletal muscle portion of it — typically around half. Why the Confusion Matters
Smart scales and fitness apps report "muscle mass" that is usually derived from a lean-mass estimate, and rapid changes in either number are dominated by water and glycogen, not tissue. Gaining 1 kg of LBM overnight is hydration; gaining 1 kg of actual muscle takes most people a month or more of consistent training. When a claim or a plan says "muscle", check whether the number behind it is really LBM.

Is lean body mass the same as muscle mass?
No. Lean body mass includes muscle plus bone, organs, skin, and body water. Skeletal muscle is typically only

If my LBM went up, did I gain muscle?
Not necessarily. Water retention, glycogen, and food in transit all move LBM. Sustained LBM gains over weeks of
training and adequate protein do mostly reflect muscle.
