What the Calculator Computes

Our lean body mass calculator runs three validated estimation formulas from sex, height, and weight — and switches to a direct calculation when you enter a body fat percent:

A Worked Example

A man, 80 kg and 180 cm: Boer gives 0.407×80 + 0.267×180 − 19.2 ≈ 61.4 kg; James gives about 62.7 kg; Hume about 57.8 kg. At a measured 20% body fat the direct value is 80 × 0.80 = 64 kg — the number to use, with the three formulas as context. A 2–5 kg spread between methods is normal.

What to Do With Your LBM

Frequently Asked Questions

Which lean body mass formula should I use?
Boer is the best default — it tracks measured lean mass most closely for most adults. A reliable body fat percent beats all three formulas because it turns the estimate into a direct calculation.

Why do the three formulas disagree?
Each was fitted to a different reference population. Differences of 2 to 5 kg between Boer, James, and Hume are normal; the cluster of the three is your realistic range.

Can lean body mass exceed my scale weight?
No — that would be physically impossible. The James formula can drift above total weight at extreme heights and weights, which is why our calculator caps it and flags the result.
