Reading the Year-by-Year Table
The most useful row in our calculator's output is the crossover: the year the interest column first exceeds your annual contributions (6,000 in the default example). Before it, your saving habit drives growth; after it, the balance itself does. Starting five years earlier moves that crossover five years earlier — which is the entire "start early" argument in one table. The Rule of 72 gives the same intuition as mental math.
Common Mistakes
Three patterns produce flattering nonsense. Best-case rates: projecting decades at an above-average return compounds the optimism along with the money — bracket with a conservative rate instead. Ignoring the deposit reality: a projection assuming contributions you cannot sustain is a story, not a plan. Forgetting inflation: the output is nominal; at 2–3% inflation, a 20-year balance buys roughly a third less than the number suggests. And a projection is not advice — actual investment returns vary year to year and are not guaranteed.

Does contribution timing matter?
Beginning-of-month contributions earn one extra month of interest each; over a decade that compounds to
roughly half a percent more. Real but small — consistency of contributions matters far more.
Why does my bank's number differ slightly?
