BMR vs TDEE
BMR and TDEE are related but not interchangeable, and mixing them up is one of the most common calorie-planning mistakes. BMR is what you burn at complete rest; TDEE is what you burn across the whole day, activity included. For meal planning and body-composition goals, TDEE is the practical reference point — but you need BMR to calculate it, and knowing both protects you from setting dangerously low targets.
Definitions
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is the energy your body needs just to stay alive: organ function, body temperature, tissue repair. It is measured at rest, fasted, in a neutral-temperature environment. For most people it accounts for roughly 60–70% of total daily burn.

A Numeric Example
A 30-year-old man, 80 kg, 180 cm: his Mifflin-St Jeor BMR is about 1,780 kcal. If he exercises moderately 3–5 days per week, his TDEE is 1,780 × 1.55 ≈ 2,760 kcal. Those two numbers are nearly 1,000 kcal apart. Confusing them matters: eating "at BMR" thinking it means maintenance would put him in a ~1,000-kcal daily deficit — far more aggressive than intended and hard to sustain.
Which Number Should You Plan With?
Plan with TDEE. A weight-loss deficit is set from TDEE (for example TDEE minus 300–500 kcal), not from BMR. BMR's practical role is different: it is a useful floor. If a diet plan asks you to eat well below your BMR for an extended period, that is a signal the plan is too aggressive and worth reconsidering — energy intake below the body's resting requirement is difficult to sustain and makes muscle loss and rebound more likely.
Common Misconceptions
- "BMR is my calorie target." No — BMR is your resting burn. Targets are set relative to TDEE.
- "TDEE is fixed." Both numbers fall as you lose weight and shift when your routine changes; recalculate every 4 to 8 weeks.

- "RMR and BMR are different numbers I need to track." RMR is measured under looser conditions and runs slightly higher, but for everyday planning the distinction rarely changes a decision.

Can I eat below my BMR?
Short-term it happens (for example on very-low-calorie medical diets), but as a self-directed strategy it is a red
flag: the deficit is usually far larger than needed, and adherence and muscle retention both suffer. A moderate
deficit from TDEE achieves the same goal more sustainably.
